Landy Mods : Hannibal Safari Roof Rack

Since getting our Oztent it was clear we needed to start looking for a new roof rack. The Safety devices unit served us well but since we don't need to carry jerry cans anymore mounts it made sense to get something that would be easier to fit the Oztent on and also with a lower profile for our double kayak.

When it comes to roof racks, Australia is not blessed with a multitude of options so I started looking elsewhere. I came across the Hannibal Safari website and made some enquiries. From all accounts these racks are the ducks nuts and with a flatbed profile with removable side and rear rails it was obvious this one would fit like a glove. Only problem was .. they are made in South-Africa so either import one at huge cost or buy one from a local distributor (also at huge cost!!). As it turned out the rack proved to be good value with a multitude of options (rear step, ladder, high lift and shovel mount and tie down rings), they are also made from aluminium which meant less weight on the gutter rails of the fender. Andre and Niels were once again available to give me a hand and we fitted without too many issues. The only setback was the bolts supplied for the side and rear rails were too long so a quick trip to Bunnings was in order. All done and the rack certainly looks the goods on Greylandy .. now for that set of spotties on the front!

Update: I've since fitted the Rhino Kayak carriers which was a breeze, they simply bolted to the grooves on the slats which are made to fit accessories. The kayak sits a lot lower compared to the Safety Devices rack and we can easily fit the oztent without breaking a back. I've also fitted the rear work lamp with a bracket made out of angle aluminium .. easy as!
